HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET MY EYES DILATED? WHAT IF I DON’T WANT TO GET MY EYES DILATED DUE TO SIDE EFFECTS?
Annual dilation is recommended. For patients who have diabetes or hypertension, annual dilation is REQUIRED to check for hemorrhages and signs of diabetic retinopathy. If you have an existing retinal condition, your doctor will inform you how often you need your retina checked, usually from 3 months to a year. If you don’t want to be dilated, we have Daytona retinal imaging system that can capture your entire retina without needing to dilate. However, if your doctor finds some abnormalities in the photos, a dilation might be needed for a better assessment.

WHEN SHOULD I BRING MY KID(S) IN FOR THE FIRST EXAM?
According to the American Optometric Association, first exam should be at 6 months old for screening for any defects, one more exam in between 3 and 5 years old, and annual exam after 6 years old. Often time kids won’t tell you that they can’t see because that’s how they see all their life. They think that’s how you’re supposed to see. Our job as parents and doctors is to help them have the best vision possible to perform good in school.
